Help and ideas
Our guides and lists, and a few places that can help this week, and in the weeks after.
From us
- Guides for making a memorial video: step by step, from gathering photos to the service.
- Funeral songs: lists by who they were to you, by faith and by style, with Listen.
- Funeral poems: poems to read at the service, printed in full.
- Bible verses for a funeral: for the service, a program or a slide.
- Happy birthday in heaven: messages and ways to spend the day.
- Celebration of life ideas: at home, outdoors, with food and music.
- Free PowerPoint template: a slideshow template for the service.
Scanning old photos
- Lay the print flat by a window in daylight and take the picture straight from above. That's good enough for a memorial video.
- Ask at your public library. Many have a photo scanner you can use for free, and someone to show you how.
- How to preserve family archives: the National Archives on handling old prints and keeping the originals safe.
Support in grief
- Coping with grief and loss: plain advice for the months after a death, from the National Institute on Aging.
- The Dougy Center: help for grieving children and teens, and for the adults who care for them.
- 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline: if grief ever feels like too much, call or text 988 in the US, any time of day or night.
Planning a funeral or celebration of life
- Shopping for funeral services: your rights under the Funeral Rule, from the Federal Trade Commission.
- Dealing with the death of a loved one: who to tell, death certificates and survivor benefits, from USA.gov.
- Burials and memorials: if they served, the VA may help with burial, a headstone and a memorial certificate.
