Christian funeral songs
Christian funeral songs speak of hope: that the person you love is at peace, and that you will meet again. Families often pair an old gospel song everyone knows with a newer worship song from their own church. Below are the songs families choose, each with a line on why it fits.

Hymn, gospel song or worship song
Hymns are the old songs of the church, sung by everyone together, often with an organ. Our funeral hymns page has the traditional ones.
Gospel songs such as I'll Fly Away and Precious Lord, Take My Hand grew out of American churches and are made to be sung with feeling, often by a soloist or a choir. Worship songs are the newer songs many churches sing on Sunday mornings. A song like I Can Only Imagine by MercyMe is usually played as a recording.
Ask the church first
If the service is in a church, the pastor or priest will usually help you choose, and many churches have musicians who play at funerals. At a Catholic funeral Mass, popular songs usually wait for the vigil, the reception or the graveside, while hymns like On Eagle's Wings and Ave Maria are common at the Mass itself.
Singing together or listening
A song the whole congregation knows works best sung live: there is comfort in singing together. A solo song is often better as a recording, or sung by the church's soloist. If someone in the family wants to sing, a run-through in the church the day before helps.

Questions families ask
What is the most played song at a Christian funeral?
There's no worldwide count, but Amazing Grace is sung at Christian funerals across churches and countries. In America, How Great Thou Art and It Is Well with My Soul are common too. In Britain, Abide With Me was the most chosen hymn in Co-op Funeralcare's 2025 chart.
What is a good goodbye song for a Christian funeral?
I'll Fly Away says goodbye with joy, and many families play it as people leave. For something quieter, Precious Lord, Take My Hand or Go Rest High on That Mountain. Each works as a recording or sung live.
What is a good Christian song to sing when someone dies?
If everyone will sing, choose a hymn they know, such as Amazing Grace. If one person sings, It Is Well with My Soul or Precious Lord, Take My Hand. Both were written in deep grief: Horatio Spafford wrote the first after his four daughters died at sea, and Thomas A. Dorsey wrote the second after his wife and baby son died.
Can we play contemporary Christian music at a funeral?
At a funeral home, yes, and at many Protestant churches; ask the pastor first. At a Catholic funeral Mass, contemporary songs usually belong at the vigil or the reception. A worship song can also go in the memorial video, which you can show at the reception.
