A laptop showing a slide with a family photo in a white frame

Funeral slideshow template for PowerPoint

Our free funeral slideshow template is a PowerPoint file with five slides: an opening slide with room for a photo, their name and the years, three photo slides and a closing slide with a few words of thanks. You click the picture icon in a frame to add a photo, and duplicate a photo slide for each photo you want to show. We send it to you by email.

What's in the free template

  • The opening slide: a frame for their photo on the left and, on the right, the words In loving memory, their name and the years, over white lilies.
  • Three photo slides, one photo on each, on soft gray with white lilies in the corners. One frame is wide, one tall and one square, so most photos fit without losing a head or a hand.
  • The closing slide: the words Thank you for being here with us, over candles and white roses.

The slides are 16:9, the shape of a TV or a laptop screen. The words are set in Georgia, a font every Windows computer and Mac already has, and you can change every one of them. The backgrounds are our own pictures, made for our memorial videos.

The file opens in PowerPoint on Windows and on a Mac. Keynote and Google Slides open it too, but the picture frames may not work the same way there: if clicking a frame does nothing, add the photo from the Insert menu and move it over the frame.

How to use the funeral slideshow template

  1. Add the photos

Click the small picture icon inside a frame, choose a photo and click Insert. PowerPoint fills the frame with it and may trim the edges. To show a different part, click the photo, choose Crop on the Picture Format tab and drag the photo inside the frame.

  2. Make a slide for each photo

Right-click a photo slide in the list on the left and choose Duplicate Slide. Copy the one whose frame suits the photo: wide for most photos, tall for portraits, square for old square prints. If the copy already has a photo in it, right-click the photo and choose Change Picture.

  3. Put them in the order of their life

Drag the slides up or down in the list on the left. Most families start with baby photos and end with a recent favorite, so guests can follow the story without a word of explanation.

  4. Add their name and the years

On the first slide, select the words Their name and type the name over them, then do the same with the years. In loving memory and the words on the last slide change the same way.

  5. Set the timing

Click a slide in the list on the left and press Ctrl+A, or Command+A on a Mac, to select them all. On the Transitions tab, choose Fade for a gentle change between photos, tick After and set it to 5 or 6 seconds. Then click the last slide and untick After, so the closing words stay on screen.

  6. Add a song

Click the first slide, then on the Insert tab choose Audio and pick a song saved on your computer. On the Playback tab, click Play in Background, and the song plays across all the slides. A song usually lasts 3 to 4 minutes, enough for 30 to 40 photos at 6 seconds each.

  7. Save it as a video

Choose File, then Export. On Windows, pick Create a Video and Full HD (1080p); on a Mac, pick MP4 as the file format. The video keeps the music and the timing, and it plays on a TV or a laptop without PowerPoint.

Old prints

Photograph each print with your phone, straight from above and by a window in daylight, and add it like any other photo. Our guide on scanning old photos has more on glare, frames and photos stuck in albums.

Get the template by email

Type your email address and we'll send you a link to the PowerPoint file. That's all the form asks for.

We email the template once. No newsletters.

Or have the slides made from your photos

With a template, you place every photo yourself. With us, you upload the photos, up to 250, and AI suggests their order by age from how old they look in each one. You check the order, move any photo that's out of place and watch the full preview free. The preview is ready within 4 minutes of the upload.

  • Slides only, $25: a PowerPoint file with a slide for each photo, the opening and closing slides, and the same backgrounds and frames as the video. The names and words stay yours to change.
  • The video with the slides, $49: the MP4 in 1080p without the watermark, the same PowerPoint file and a memorial page to share with family.

Either way you pay once, and only if you download. See the prices or start with your photos.

Questions about the template

Can I use this template in Google Slides?

Yes. Upload the file to Google Drive and open it with Google Slides. The picture frames may not respond to a click there, so add each photo with Insert, Image and drag it over the frame. Music in Google Slides has to come from your Google Drive.

Is there a funeral slideshow template in Canva?

Canva has memorial slideshow templates of its own, which you fill in a web browser and download as a video. Ours is made for PowerPoint. Use the program you already know: the photos matter far more than the template.

How many photos can I put in the template?

As many as you like: duplicate a photo slide for each one. For a service, 50 to 100 photos make a slideshow of 5 to 10 minutes at 6 seconds each. Our guide on how long a memorial video should be helps you plan the length.

How do I add music to a PowerPoint slideshow?

Click the first slide and choose Insert, Audio, then Audio on My PC on Windows or Audio from File on a Mac. On the Playback tab, click Play in Background, so the song starts with the slideshow and carries on across the slides. It has to be a song file, such as an MP3: songs in a streaming app like Spotify can't be added. Our songs for a memorial slideshow can help you choose.

How do I play the slideshow at the service from a USB stick?

Save it as a video first (File, Export) and copy the MP4 file to the USB stick. Most TVs with a USB port and almost any laptop play it, with the music and the timing inside. Ask the funeral home what they play videos from, and try the stick on a TV at home first.

Can I use it for a celebration of life or a memorial service?

Yes. Change In loving memory on the first slide to Celebrating the life of, or any words you like, and put your own words on the last slide. The template works the same for a funeral, a memorial service or a gathering at home.
